Thank you for writing about this book. I put in a request to borrow it from my local library. They have it on their shelves, and I did not have to wait long for it to arrive. I like the library, for I am into "slow spending."

I like walking in New York City looking at the disparate architecture , looking up , and not down into a blackberry , jamming my thumb texting. I marvel and idle in front of the slow architecture of the last century and get appalled at the steel and glass flimsy atrocities that are being put up all over this city within months, not years right now.

Absolutely good. Right way of thinking, acting. Listening now on the radio on the subject, Geir Berthelsen, from Kristiansand, Norway.
Count on me here. Try to think and act like this. It is not easy in my life, but I can and do more and more.

Dear Christopher,

I believe Socrates did say something similar, and his experience with hemlock simply proved the wisdom of avoiding all these herbal 'teas' in favour of the real thing.

It is a shame that Slow London has apparently lapsed. I really enjoyed what they were doing with it. Mind, there is always a danger for all of us extolling the virtues of a slower life that geological epochs may pass between posts.

Your post has all of us here at the International Institute of Not Doing Much (IINDM) in a state of justifiable consternation at the outrageous news that a good cup of tea is unavailable in London. The place is going to the dogs. Not only has SlowLondon.com disappeared from the internet, (without trace apparently), but now we hear that Mr. Blair himself has let this most revered tradition slide. Life without a good cup of tea is not worth living. Isn’t that what Socrates said so wisely?

Fortunately, there are those of us who do know how to make a good cup of tea. It requires patience, skill and the ability to savor.

Yours in slowness,

Christopher

PS. Your membership application to the IINDM can be found here.

Thank you all for your comments, and I hope you enjoy continuing to read the Sloth Ethic.

jcr: there is nothing better than relaxing with a good book, forgetting the world for a moment or two and letting the time flow by unheeded. It is the very definition of a slothful pleasure.

natalief: yours is an awful story but one I suspect happens so often. And yes, it is so much more productive when you are working at home, isn't it?

anon: cult is the right description. Isn't it wonderful when you realise that there is something more to life than the grind? As the saying goes, who ends up on their deathbed saying "I wish I spent more time at the office"?
